In cross-stitching correct tension is important. Having too strong or too loose of a tension can totally destroy the impression of your project. The threads should be flat against the fabric you are using, but not too tight, so that they are actually pulling the fabric in any way.

The easy to keep from losing your cross-stitch needles, is to glue a magnetic strip to the inside of the box you keep your embroidery floss and other accessories.
It is very important to double check your counting. It is called counted cross stitch, isn't it? If even one missing stitch in important area can destroy the project. So please, check your counting before you start the stitching. It's worth it.

You can find fabric for cross stitching in different sizes, colors and types.

Aida, linen and evenweave are the most common types of cross-stitch fabric. The standard Aida fabric is a good fabric for beginners because the holes are large and easy to see.
Note - it is the number of holes per inch that determines the size of your stitches.
There are a lot of styles of embroidery hoops and frames. It is your decision whether you use one or not. If you a beginner cross-stitcher perhapse you will prefere to put your fabric in an embroidery hoop. Just don’t pull your fabric too tight or it will distort the weave of the fabric.
If you want to iron your cross-stitch project, set your iron to its lowest "Warm" setting. While ironing place your cross-stitch project on top of two or three smooth towels right side down.
You can use another flat towel to put over the back of the fabric ,to safely iron your cross-stitch design.
It is tempting to stitch for hours at a time, especially when you can make the time and when you get in the "stitching zone." It is important to avoid this temptation, especially when you are a new stitcher. Taking breaks helps to prevent repetitive stress injuries and eyestrain.
Stop stitching, get up, stretch, rest your eyes and hands for a moment, and then start again if you like. If you have trouble with "getting in the zone" and forgetting to take breaks, use a timer. Use the TV schedule or musical selections. When the buzzer, show or CD stops, it is time for a break.
