Cross stitch is typically done using a round-end tapestry needle. The size you use depends on your fabric. If you are stitching a kit, use the needle that came with it. If not, see this article on choosing a needle for cross stitch.

Thread your needle just as you would a needle for hand sewing. Don’t make a knot in the tail end. You will stitch over the tail as you work to secure it without needing a knot. As a general rule, you want to avoid using knots when cross stitching because they can leave lumps in the final piece.

To embroider properly use a special cross stitch needle. Such needles do not have a point and are larger because the thread is also thicker.
In the average pack of needles, you will find different sizes.
There are also specific needlework needles that allow you to do a certain stitch better, such as a French knot.

If you want accurate stitching without counting every stitch you may want to draw gridlines on your cloth. Recently pregrid fabric has become available which is a blessing for the crossstitchers.
Buy all your supplies for a project at the start. Thread comes in dye lots that may vary slightly between batches.
It is very important to work slowly when you try new techniques or stitching fibers such as metallic flosses. That way you learn how to do it properly without accidentally messing up your pattern along the way.
