Before washing your cross-stitch project, just check the fibers for colorfastness to prevent dyes from running. It is simple: dampen a piece of white cloth with water and gently rub it over each different color in your piece. If there is any color transfer to the white cloth don’t wash your piece if you want prevent your work from discoloration and fading.

To embroider properly use a special cross stitch needle. Such needles do not have a point and are larger because the thread is also thicker.
In the average pack of needles, you will find different sizes.
There are also specific needlework needles that allow you to do a certain stitch better, such as a French knot.

The easy to keep from losing your cross-stitch needles, is to glue a magnetic strip to the inside of the box you keep your embroidery floss and other accessories.
It is very important to double check your counting. It is called counted cross stitch, isn't it? If even one missing stitch in important area can destroy the project. So please, check your counting before you start the stitching. It's worth it.
Make sure your stitches are not too tight. If you pull down the needle too tight, the stitches will look flat, and the Aida fabric may
be damaged.
Of course it is preferable to embroider in natural light: it puts less strain on your eyes, but it does not always work. So try to embroider closer to the lamp.
Try to plan the whole design in advance. Check that you have all the accessories. This is so annoying when the thread is over, when all the cross-stitch project is almost done.
Many stitchers prefere to use an embroidery hoop or a scrollbar stretcher. Nonetheless, it's still many times the fabric, which is usually made of cotton, eventualy becomes rumpled or wrinkled during the stitching process. Properly ironing the fabric before framing is a quick, easy way of eliminating wrinkles and leaving your cross stitch project looking its best.

Aida, linen and evenweave are the most common types of cross-stitch fabric. The standard Aida fabric is a good fabric for beginners because the holes are large and easy to see.
Note - it is the number of holes per inch that determines the size of your stitches.
