Before washing your cross-stitch project, just check the fibers for colorfastness to prevent dyes from running. It is simple: dampen a piece of white cloth with water and gently rub it over each different color in your piece. If there is any color transfer to the white cloth don’t wash your piece if you want prevent your work from discoloration and fading.

Don't leave the project in the hoop overnight. When you're done cross-stitching for the day don't forget to take it out of the hoop. Your embroidery project needs rest to!
And another important thing. No matter which direction your top leg of stitch is going, but please be sure that they are all going in the same direction.
Try to buy all your threads for a specific cross-stitch project at once. Why? Because the embroidery thread is dyed in different dye lots. Hence even if you think that you get a specific color from a specific manufacturer, it can sometimes have a slightly different hue. Most times it is not that noticeable, but to be on the safe side, buy it all at once.
You can find fabric for cross stitching in different sizes, colors and types.

Aida, linen and evenweave are the most common types of cross-stitch fabric. The standard Aida fabric is a good fabric for beginners because the holes are large and easy to see.
Note - it is the number of holes per inch that determines the size of your stitches.
To embroider properly use a special cross stitch needle. Such needles do not have a point and are larger because the thread is also thicker.
In the average pack of needles, you will find different sizes.
There are also specific needlework needles that allow you to do a certain stitch better, such as a French knot.
